127 – Suggest Motion
A gesture, a head turned in a certain direction, or the suggestion of movement can “activate” a scene. When adding a person, think of things that can imply movement – like the swish of a ponytail, a head turn or a person navigating a change in elevation, like steps or a ramp.
I needed to adapt my building plan as my original idea for a mural didn’t work out. To begin filling the space, I made an exit doorway for the amusement park ride and added a person. Her pose of looking back, maybe to see if friends are right behind, and running down a ramp captures the giddy rush of leaving a thrill ride.
The character is built on a silicone sheet, so it doesn’t stick when pieces are ironed in place with fusible web. Light blue fabric is the base that I start building on to. Freehand fussy cutting with tiny scissors to get details of hair and shadows. I might add a handrail, but that could be done with thread work in the sewing stage.
