Cotton, batting, Procion dye, acrylic ink, textile paint
Techniques:
Whole cloth quilt, painted with Procion dye, acrylic ink and textile paint.
Knots & Tangles
Painting with Procion dye is very different from the textile paints and inks that I am used to. The final color is not immediately apparent, for one thing. Another factor that I disliked was the chemical process – mixtures and safety precautions are much more exacting, so it takes away the feeling of spontaneity.
Work Contents
Paint Usage?
This is a wholecloth quilt – it is entirely painted before stitching. I started by painting with Procion dye, as taught in a workshop with Hollis Chatelain. Disliking that media, I switched to textile paint to finish.
Computer Usage?
I viewed my laptop screen while painting to get the colors similar to my photograph
Reliance on Reference Photos?
This is a cropped version of one of my photographs from Cuba. (An amazing place for photography!)
The quilt began with a dye painting class with Hollis Chatelain at Houston Quilt Festival. I used some of my photographs from a trip to Cuba.
