Materials:
Cotton, fusible web, tulle, batting

Fused raw edge appliqué, machine and hand stitched

Knots & Tangles

There is no paint used on this quilt, as I was going through a phase where I thought painting was cheating. I expanded my collection of fabrics and enjoyed the challenge of creating everything, even the caution tape, through collage.

Research about the story and gathering reference photos.

Reliance on Reference Photos?

I relied on reference photos to study Amish clothing. Women’s bonnets are different between sects and areas of the country, requiring me to redraw what I originally had. I also study about poses and body shapes to get the positions that I wanted.

Pastoral Disturbance focuses on a Pennsylvanian Amish schoolhouse where a massacre occurred in October, 2006. The perpetrator randomly victimized the children within, and surprisingly, even after ten girls were shot and 5 of them died, the community responded with forgiveness.
