Test Pattern (Carefree)
2006
17″ x 18″
Materials:
Denim and cotton fabric, fusible web, fabric glue, knitting needles, paint, batting
Techniques:
Fused raw edge appliqué, painted, braiding, machine and hand stitched
After completing a very large quilt, I needed to relax with my studio practice and enjoy the feeling of freedom – no plans, no commitments – just time to play with materials without a need to accomplish anything. I braided scraps of materials and made “God’s eyes,” a child’s craft project. I thought of the fun, and importance, of unguided play to foster imagination and experimentation in developing minds, and how that really needs to continue at any age.
Play needs to continue beyond childhood!
Knots & Tangles
I wanted grass-stained denim for the background material, but did not actually want dirt on the fabric! It took a little experimenting to achieve that look with paint.
